Let’s talk it …
Cassandra works for Mark Goldstein as his assistant. Mark is a top-rated financial broker and CEO of his Broker’s Firm. Cassandra has been Mark’s right hand for over ten years. Her previous job experience as a financial adviser help pave the way for her in understanding how to assist a financial broker. To Cassandra her job is like playing chess; in this chess game, she knows her boss moves before he makes them. She usually provides him with detail information before he asks. Cassandra attends meetings with Mark taking notes as he talks with his clients. Mark and Cassandra were so in sync it was like having one mind in two bodies. When Cassandra first start working for Mark, he was engaged to Susie. Although Mark and Susie have not planned a wedding date; Cassandra was responsible for making sure Susie received a gift each year on their anniversary and on her birthday. Many times, Mark did not know what Cassandra had purchased for Susie. He did not care as long as Susie was happy. Susie had no idea that it was Cassandra who bought all the gifts she received from Mark. She would often brag about how she had the most attentive man in the world. She would say, “he knows exactly what I need and wants; and he purchases me the best version of what I want.” Susie’ friends often told her how lucky she was to have a good man who is intelligent and financially stable. Her friends also kept asking, when is the wedding. Susie knew Mark was a busy man; she was in his life when he opened his own firm. However, her friends caused her to wonder when they would get marry. Susie realized that her and Mark never had that conversation. She was so happy to be with him once a week on date night that she never thought about using that time to ask about planning their wedding.
Susie was looking forward to Saturday. She made reservation at a fancy grill steak and seafood restaurant that overlooked the ocean. She loves seating near the window with the ocean as their background. Susie begins the conversation with “Mark, honey, you know I love you and I have been a patient woman as you open your firm.” “Yes honey, you have been by my side every step of the way; states Mark.” “Well honey says Susie; with that being said, I’m ready for us to go to the next level. I would like for us to set a wedding date so that I can start planning our wedding.” “Susie, you know I love you; however, now is not a good time for me to divert my attention somewhere else. Things are going well the way they are now. Why would you want to bring chaos to a perfectly organized setup?” So, is that how you view our engagement as a perfectly organized setup.? We have been engaged for six years. I am ready to be a wife.” “Susie, let’s seize this moment and enjoy our meal and this ocean view. I have too much going on to engage in a toxic conversation. I always look forward to our date night, so I can un wine with a glass of wine and enjoy a little R and R with my honey. Please do not ruin this moment for me.” Susie was silence for the rest of the dinner. After dinner, upon arrival to her home, she asked Mark to not come in. She informed him that she needed time to think. “Don’t tell me you are angry about me not wanting to discuss setting a wedding date; shouts Marks.” Susie calmy replied; “me answering that question might disrupt your R and R; so, I think you need to go to your own home tonight.” Oh, so it’s like that; shouts Mark. Susie walks into her house then softly closed the door behind her in Marks face. Mark was so angry; he drives off at an accelerate speed. Susie spent the rest of that evening evaluating her and Mark’s relationship. She was angry at herself for not seeing Marks true intentions. She felt so foolish as she reminisces about their ten-year relationship. I can’t believe I did not see the signs. I have been his girlfriend for four years and his finance for six years and we haven’t move pass a once-a-week date night relationship. The next day Susie gift wrap her engagement ring in a nice box. She asks Marks assistant Cassandra if she could come pick up the gift for Mark. Susie received the answer she was looking for when Mark did not call her after receiving the gift box from Cassandra.
Cassandra had been working for Mark approximately seven years when him and Susie end their relationship. Cassandra thought to herself, well no more coming up with new gifts ideas twice a year for Susie. When Mark’s relationship with Susie ended, he begins to take Cassandra with him on his business trips. After a year of traveling with Mark, Cassandra felt she should be accommodated for the extra hours she was putting in; but, was nervous about asking for a raise. She rationalized her fear by thinking; well, I get to travel all over the world; stay at five-star hotels and eat good food all at the expense of my boss. Cassandra begins to realized that some of the trips appeared to be personal in nature. She was never asked to sit in a meeting to take notes, and they would spend the evening attending a Gala or some type of black-tie event. Approximately, one year ago, Mark took Cassandra to Paris. After a night of drinking wine at an event, Mark had to help Cassandra back to her room. She was a little tipsy but coherent. The next day Cassandra woke up to Mark sleeping in her bed. They both was nude. She vaguely remembers them being intimate. She wasn’t sure how to handle the situation. She got up to shower before Mark had a chance to see her nude lying next to him. As she comes out the bathroom fully dressed, Mark is sitting up in bed smiling. He tells her, I hope you enjoyed last night as much as I did. Cassandra asked Mark why was he in her room and bed all night. Mark states, you asked me to stay. Cassandra wasn’t one hundred percent sure; but she does remember participating willingly. She has faint visions of her being on top of him, and kissing him. She decided to not say anything about last night. She made a mental note to not have more than two drinks with Mark. She never, ever wanted to be in a position where she is not in control of herself or her decisions due to drinking too much. After eating breakfast, they both packed in preparation for their evening flight back to the U.S.
After returning home, Cassandra noticed that Mark was treating her like they were a couple. She wasn’t sure if something was said in Paris that gave him the impression they were in a relationship or if he solely came to that conclusion based on the one night they slept together. She wanted to discuss the Paris trip with him but wasn’t sure how to approach it. The opportunity presented itself when Mark asked her to set up a weekly date night on the calendar for them. He told her that it had been two weeks since they made love and he miss her. Cassandra did not feel comfortable talking about date night or Paris with him at work. She scheduled a date for them to have dinner and talk.
At dinner Cassandra informed Mark that she wasn’t clear on what was said in Paris for them to end up in a position of dating each other. Mark became offensive with his reply; “are you saying that you don’t want to date me?” “That’s not what I’m saying Mark. I’m trying to remember how we end up in bed together in Paris.” “Well, states Mark, I took you to your hotel room after the event. You didn’t want me to leave. You started to kiss me. Are you trying to tell me that you honestly do not remember what happen in Paris; asked Mark.” That’s exactly what I am saying; states Cassandra. “Look, I want you to know that I did not take advantage of you. I honestly thought that you were okay and knew what you were consenting to; because, we were equally initialing the intimacy. I enjoyed myself with you and I thought you did as well. The next day you appeared to be okay; for this reason, I assumed we were a couple. Are you saying you do not want to be in relationship with me?” “Mark, I don’t know what I am saying. You are my boss and that how I initially wanted to keep it. Yes, I find you attractive. I always did; however, I held my professional relationship with you to it highest esteem. I never wanted it change beyond professional. Now my emotions are all over the place. I’m not sure what I am feeling. I do not like the confusion.” “Well, Cassandra, we are here now. Let’s just enjoy where we are at. I enjoy being with you and I love how well you take care of me. Can we agree that we are a couple?” Yes, Mark, we can agree. After dinner, Mark and Cassandra spent the night together.
Months has passed since Mark and Cassandra agreed to date each other. Cassandra realized that her responsibilities as Mark assistant / girlfriend has double her workload without compensation. In additional to her normal professional work load; she now cooks and clean for him; she washes his towels and bedding and takes his clothes to the cleaners. She organizes and hosts personal events he has with friends and family. She takes his dog to the groomer and occasionally walks the dog around the neighborhood. Because she is Mark’s only assistant; there is no one to remind him of her birthday or their anniversary. She celebrates his birthday with him, but he never asks when is her birthday. Their once-a-week date night has become a once-a-week quickie. Mark no longer spends the night with Cassandra or hold her in his arms the way he used to. Cassandra is starting to feel overwhelmed and unappreciated. The romance in their relationship faded quickly. Her feelings were now starting to affect her professional relationship. She no longer wanted to be Mark’s assistant or his girlfriend. Mark noticed that Cassandra wasn’t as sufficient in completing her task in a timely manner. He begins too compliant to her. Cassandra was so confused; she would ask Mark; is this my boss talking or my lover talking. She expresses to Mark that she no longer knows what is work related or personal because it all looks and feels the same. Mark tells Cassandra that she needs to get it together because her lack in performance was affecting his business. He asks her, what does she needs to get back on track.
Cassandra looks Mark in his eyes as her eyes become watery. She tells him.
Early in the morning I put breakfast at your table
And make sure that your coffee has its sugar and cream
Now you say the juice is sour, it used to be so sweet
And I can’t help but to wonder if you’re talking about me
We don’t talk the way we used to talk, it’s hurting so deep
I got my pride; I will not cry
But it’s making me weak
I’m not your superwoman
I’m not the kind of girl that you can let down
And think that everything’s okay
I am only human
This girl needs more than occasional hugs
As a token of love from you to me.
Mark felt the sincerity in Cassandra voice. He expressed to her that he did not want to lose her as his girlfriend. He asked Cassandra to quit her job as his assistance and to marry him. He informed Cassandra that they would work together to find a replacement for her at work. Cassandra and Mark embraced each other in a passionate hug as tears row down their face.
